Before things can get better, you have to try to stop letting them get worse. Someone has to lead. This generally means learning how to interrupt your own negative responses to the situation, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are not helping an already difficult situation. Nothing changes without change - and the first change starts with us. When we say we need to change ourselves, we mean that we need to make ourselves healthy (a BPD relationship can break us down). We need to learn to communicate in a validating way to a person with the disorder, and at the same time be able to set limits and define our own boundaries and constructively enforce them.
